DIY

I didn't know the term DIY till I got here in Taiwan. These 3 letters stand out amongst the Chinese characters of most signs.

(Yup that is a head shop in Taipei, but cannabis is illegal in Taiwan, and the penalties are up to 3 years in prison for possession, (sounds like Texas!))

Almost anything can be labeled DIY.
Hardware shops are probably the most conspicuous promoters. And the underlying idea is that if you do-it-yourself then it will be cheaper.
At a store like this you might find anything, but everyone keeps a mental list of where to go to get what.
But the idea shows up is some strange areas.
But even before this DIY movement, Taiwan has been into DIY for a long time. In the form of "Huoguo". In this case, you go to a restaurant and you have a hot pot of boiling water at your table. You order your ingredients and make your own soup/stew at your table. For the "restaurant", they don't need any cooks as the customers do the cooking themselves. And the customers really can't complain that the cooking was done poorly.
